==Early career==

He was born in Ellon, Aberdeenshire on 23 October 1849〔‘REID, Sir James’, Who Was Who, A & C Black, 1920–2008; online edn, Oxford University Press, Dec 2007 (accessed 11 July 2012 )〕 and educated at Aberdeen Grammar School 〔(Letters of Sir James Reid ). archives.lib.ed.ac.uk〕 and the University of Aberdeen. He qualified as a Doctor of Medicine in 1871 and then practised in Edinburgh. He moved to London to set up a practice, seeing patients for a decade before being appointed a resident physician to Queen Victoria.
